## Issue 009 · November 8, 2026

GTM Engineer is the new job emerging from the most recent hiring cycle, as our last issue on the job titles of 2026 showed. In this issue, we take a closer look at this job role. To start, most companies hire just one: across every company we track, 241 companies posted 313 GTM Engineer jobs from November 2025 to October 2026, and 81% of them posted exactly one. Only 45 companies posted more than one. The biggest poster was Clay, the data tool many GTM Engineers use, with 11 jobs, followed by Cursor (6) and Databricks (6). The typical company hiring one is small, with 19 open jobs in total at the end of October, and 22% of them hire through a Y Combinator job board.

What makes it a new job, not just a new name, is what it asks for. Compared with sales and revenue operations postings, GTM Engineer postings ask for coding about three times as often (69% vs 23%). They ask for APIs and integrations about four times as often (54% vs 12%), and for automation tools like Clay, n8n, and Zapier about five times as often (48% vs 9%). 64% mention AI tools or LLMs (27% for operations). They ask less often for the usual operations skills: CRM experience (57% vs 66%), dashboards and forecasting (13% vs 38%), a degree (6% vs 31%), and a set number of years of experience (63% vs 83%).

The tools named in the postings show the stack: 38% name Clay, 38% Python, 38% SQL, 37% Salesforce, and 36% an LLM by name. n8n and Zapier each show up in 21%. In short, it is one person who builds and scripts a startup's sales outreach.

It pays more than the operations jobs it grew out of. For individual contributor postings that list a US base salary, the median is $165K for GTM Engineers and $135K for sales and revenue operations. That is about the same as the older Growth Engineer title ($165K) and well below Software Engineer ($205K). The gap holds at the same company: across 42 companies that post pay for both, GTM Engineers earn a median of 14% more, and earn more at 74% of them.

For founders and recruiters, GTM Engineer is now a standard first technical hire on a small company's sales team, not a growing department. Its share of new job postings barely moved this year (1.8 per 1,000 from December to February, 2.1 from August to October). If it grows from here, it will be through second hires on the same team.

How we counted: the share of new job postings only includes companies we have tracked since November 2025. Every other number uses all the companies we track, from November 2025 to October 2026. A job that was reposted several times counts once. Requirements come from the qualifications section of each posting, and pay compares individual contributor postings that list a US base salary.
