Senior Software Engineer, Backend
About the role
Senior backend-focused engineer at Numero, a fundraising software platform for political campaigns and nonprofits. Role emphasizes scaling production systems, building with AI tooling, and delivering at scale across a Ruby on Rails monolith with GraphQL API and multiple data stores.
Responsibilities
- Build and scale user-facing backend systems with significant traffic (production-scale responsibilities).
- Architect patterns that scale with growth and ensure maintainability.
- Collaborate on AI-enabled tooling and agentic coding initiatives.
- Develop and optimize SQL queries and data models for performance at scale.
- Participate in planning, estimation, code reviews, testing, and debugging (including AI-assisted workflows).
- Contribute to maintenance/migrations and feature work across NumeroQL, payments, and integrations.
Qualifications
- 6+ years of backend experience, with production systems handling high traffic.
- Strong fluency in SQL and relational data at scale; experience with indexing and batching for performance.
- Experience building scalable, reliable backend systems and patterns.
- Hands-on experience with AI tools and a willingness to push frontier in agentic coding.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and high EQ.
- Located in the continental USA and willing to travel 1-2x per year.
