FDE hiring keeps scaling up, and Databricks has moved to the front
Across the companies that post Forward Deployed Engineers in volume, open FDE roles climbed from 106 to 377 over nine months. Databricks split the role into industry teams and vaulted from the middle of the pack to the top, and a layer of managers and org roles is forming on top of the engineers.

Google DeepMind is in a hiring freeze
One of the world's top AI labs has almost stopped posting jobs. New openings on Google DeepMind's careers site have fallen to near zero since May, and its open roles have drained from a January peak of 147 to about 10, most of them core research and Gemini roles.

OpenAI's open job postings are at an all-time high (713, up 69% since November) while Anthropic's have fallen 19% from their April peak. The two AI labs are now hiring in opposite directions, and go-to-market is where OpenAI is pulling away: 2.2 times Anthropic's open commercial roles.
