About the role

Software engineer focused on operating system networking within an illumos-based host OS (Helios) at Oxide Computer, with end-to-end hardware/software co-design emphasis including custom sled, backplane, and switch.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a team to design, build, and bring up host system software, with a focus on networking aspects
  • Enhance/write drivers for various networking devices (merchant silicon NICs, switching silicon, FPGA-based NICs, etc.)
  • Read and write code in C (OS level), in Rust (OPTE and Propolis), and potentially some P4; all code is open source
  • Help improve performance of the lowest layers of the networking stack (hardware offloads, software rearchitecture, implementation improvements)

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with operating systems networking concepts and proficiency in C and/or Rust
  • Experience with hardware networking at the hardware layer and OS networking layer
  • Interest in writing OS kernel code enabling networking hardware features
  • Ability to optimize networks toward line rate through rigorous analysis and careful implementation
  • Experience in OS guts and debugging complex problems
  • Strong documentation, communication, and cross-disciplinary collaboration skills
