About the role
Networking-focused software engineer role spanning firmware to end-user software for a rack-scale system, including an integrated switch, custom compute sled, and orchestration software; emphasis on hardware/software co-design and open-source components.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with systems engineers to understand customer use cases and implement the core of the Oxide platform.
- Operate across multiple layers of the stack to build a rack-scale system, including the integrated switch, custom compute sled, and software connecting and orchestrating them.
- Develop tools to simulate and analyze complex networks, including production environments at customer sites.
- Write code in Rust, C, and some P4. The codebase includes open-source components such as the Oxide Packet Transformation Engine and in-kernel Rust modules for packet processing.
Qualifications
- Have previously worked with Rust or another low-level systems language such as C.
- Have a deep understanding of load balancing.
- Have experience operating and developing IPsec-based VPN technologies.
- Have implemented networking protocols in high-performance, correctness-constrained environments.
- Have experience designing, implementing, deploying and operating data center networks using dynamic routing protocols and overlay networks.
- Have experience with BGP implementation or deployment.
- Enjoy owning inter-rack networking end-to-end (host OS + NIC + switch + switch OS) and integrating networking with customer networks.
- Are energized by prototyping new protocols, analyzing customer networking pathologies, and bringing kernel drivers to life.
- Produce good documentation and/or written descriptions of ideas.
- Believe that open, transparent interfaces are important and seek to advance networking beyond closed systems.
