About the role
Software engineer role focused on building and maintaining a Rust-based VMM (Propolis) and its illumos-based host OS (Helios) within Oxide’s virtualization stack. Involves in-kernel virtualization, user-space VMM, and interfacing with hardware and firmware.
Responsibilities
- Work with a team to design, build, and bring up host system software, in-kernel virtualization, and the user-space VMM on current and future Oxide computers
- Read and write code in Rust (Propolis), C (Helios), and/or microprocessor assembly. All code is open source
- Grow and apply understanding of microprocessors through documentation, hardware interaction, and producing own documents
- Contribute to the security and resiliency of the system by designing for failure from the ground up
- Participate in rigorous code review to maintain production-ready state
- Apply a customer-centric view to development of end-to-end features and functions across the stack
- Contribute to design of new Oxide hardware and software components elsewhere in the stack
Qualifications
- Familiarity with operating systems or virtualization concepts and comfort with C, Rust, or other low-level systems languages
- Desire to work across core OS architecture, hardware interface, networking, and virtual device development
- Experience solving problems from first principles and architectural exploration
- Experience in virtualization technologies (e.g., KVM, Hyper-V, bhyve) or related systems
- Ability to interface with hardware with potentially incomplete or inaccurate documentation
- Strong debugging, documentation, and collaboration skills
