About the role

Thermal Engineer focused on designing and developing thermal control systems for space-based data centers, including thermal analysis, hardware design, testing, and validation to ensure reliability and performance in orbit.

Responsibilities

  • Design and Analysis: Conduct preliminary and detailed thermal analysis on spacecraft and subsystems for operational conditions in orbit (cold plates, coolant loops, pumps, large deployable radiators); design, analyze, and optimize thermal control systems balancing performance, mass, cost, and reliability; provide thermal analysis during architectural trades.
  • Testing and Validation: Conduct rapid prototyping and testing of engineering models; build FM thermal hardware; define, lead, and execute thermal cycling and thermal vacuum tests for development and qualification at subsystem and spacecraft levels.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Good competency with Thermal Desktop and Ansys
  • 5+ years of experience with active thermal control, ideally in space, delivering solutions optimized for mass, cost, reliability, performance, and manufacturability.

About Starcloud

Data centers in space

(Formerly known as Lumen Orbit) Starcloud is building data centers in space, initially to provide GPU compute to other satellites, and later to address the rapidly growing demand for energy caused by the deployment of AI. Falling launch costs give us access to abundant energy, passive cooling, and the ability to rapidly scale in space. In Partnership with NVIDIA's Inception Program, we are launching our demonstrator satellite in late 2025, which will have 100x more powerful GPUs than have ever been operated in space.
