About the role

Lead the technical direction and hands-on development of Radial’s AI and computational infrastructure within Astera’s Radial program. Build and scale AI systems, define architectural standards, and shape early-stage research-to-production capabilities in life sciences while fostering a culture of open science and rigorous experimentation.

Responsibilities

  • Establish AI and computational architecture across current and future Radial programs (starting with DiffUSE)
  • Shape foundational bottlenecks to build durable technical systems
  • Make build-vs-fund-vs-partner decisions across Radial’s portfolio
  • Conceive, architect, and prototype early modeling systems and core infrastructure
  • Design scalable training workflows, data pipelines, validation frameworks, and evaluation benchmarks
  • Evolve prototypes to production-grade, open platforms for the scientific community
  • Build and scale a high-caliber AI and engineering team
  • Set the technical bar through hands-on contribution and architectural leadership
  • Foster a culture of technical rigor, intellectual honesty, and disciplined experimentation
  • Engage scientific collaborators and establish technically rigorous partnerships
  • Represent Radial’s technical vision within AI and life sciences communities
  • Ensure outputs are shared as durable public goods

Qualifications

  • Deep expertise in modern ML (large-scale training, representation learning, generative modeling: diffusion, transformers, foundation models)
  • Track record translating ideas into scalable systems
  • Understanding of ML-physics interplay
  • Experience formulating and solving inverse problems (ill-posedness, regularization, learned vs model-based reconstruction)
  • Experience building ML pipelines for large-scale data-intensive problems, including data preprocessing and distributed training
  • Systems-level thinking across data generation, modeling, infrastructure, and experimentation
  • Experience designing durable, scalable technical platforms
  • Scientific range beyond a single modality, able to engage across domains
  • Leadership: managed small technical teams, attracted and retained talent
  • Hands-on builder who sets standards through personal contributions
  • Familiarity with frontier AI x Bio landscape
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity and creating clarity via disciplined technical judgment
  • Motivation to build something new, open science mindset, open-ended environments blending AI and biology
