About the role

Apple Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) accountable for developing and implementing innovative manufacturing processes across Apple’s worldwide supply base, collaborating with Industrial Design, Product Design, Manufacturing Design partners, and suppliers to deliver high-quality, cost-effective manufacturing solutions for iPhone enclosures.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate product and industrial design goals to understand dimensional, cosmetic, and functional priorities
  • Collaborate with Global Supply Managers and manufacturing suppliers to align on a manufacturing development strategy with clear goals, deliverables, and schedule
  • Identify and validate suitable fabrication equipment and processes to meet all Apple design and operational requirements
  • Develop and document processes, including all parameters, consumables, and secondary operation requirements to meet defined specifications
  • Conduct process optimization DOE’s, using data-driven and hands-on approaches to solve complex challenges
  • Communicate ongoing process development status to cross-functional teams and lead discussions to align design requirements with manufacturing capability
  • Travel within India to support manufacturing partner sites and collaborate with in-region team members
  • Familiarity with a phase gate product development approach
  • Lead development in areas related to Assembly processes, including welding, gluing/adhesives, and mechanical fit based processes; qualification of equipment at suppliers; yield improvement actions; SPC data analysis; identify automation opportunities and support automation projects
  • Develop fully automated SPM or integrated assembly automation across multiple manufacturing processes (gluing, laser welding, mechanical fastening, riveting, film lamination, spray coating, auto-wiping)
  • Design automation/equipment including mechanical/electrical component selection, machine design, electrical diagrams and routing, layout and part flow, fixture design, robot integration, CCD/PLC programming, automation simulations, and safety standards
  • Drive entire development cycle of equipment (RFQ, ROI, prototype design, DOE, BOM finalization, DFMEA/PFMEA, FAT/SAT, safety evaluations, installation/qualification, maintenance, documentation, CT/OEE optimization, modular design for reuse)
  • Willingness to travel domestically up to 75%

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in high-volume mechanical product development, manufacturing engineering, tooling engineering, high-precision fabrication, or similar roles
  • BS or higher in mechanical, manufacturing, industrial engineering, or related field
  • Hands-on experience in robotics, laser etching, laser welding, adhesive dispensing, potting, mechanical fastening, automation
  • Understanding core principles of fixture and automation design, including FEA for stress/structural analysis
  • Understanding Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
  • Understanding Data Analysis and Design of Experiments
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically up to 75%
  • Hands-on approach to engineering and problem-solving
  • Strong communication skills to influence data-driven manufacturing decisions
  • Innovative problem-solving mindset and passion for manufacturing excellence
  • Unwillingness to compromise on quality and customer satisfaction
  • Experience with OEMs and Contract Manufacturers in Consumer Electronics is a plus
