Product Design Engineer Intern (Mechanical)

About the role

Internship role at Apple focused on mechanical product design for next-generation mobile devices, including design, prototyping, failure analysis, DOEs, and collaboration with contract manufacturers in China.

Responsibilities

  • Drive failure analysis, build prototypes, study analytical models, and organize DOEs as we study new designs
  • Conceive, design, and bring into production products that will redefine the mobile experience
  • Lead projects and communicate effectively with vendors in Asia and designers inside Apple
  • Work on-site at contract manufacturers within China to implement and assemble the team’s designs
  • Work with component modules (LCD, batteries, camera modules, etc.) and interconnects (FPC design and ACF bonding)
  • Integrate wireless antenna into mechanical enclosures and combine electrical subsystems (display, microphone, speaker, receiver, camera)
  • Apply design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) principles and perform statistical tolerance analysis and geometric tolerancing
  • Utilize finite element analysis theory and related tools
  • Collaborate across teams and adapt to a constantly evolving environment

Qualifications

  • BS in mechanical engineering related fields (MS preferred)
  • Experience with plastic and metal part design
  • Working knowledge of finite element analysis theory
  • Strong analytical problem solving skills and ability to use statistical tools and techniques
  • Effective written and spoken English communication
  • Experience with overseas manufacturers
  • Travel 40%+ per year
  • Integration experience of wireless and electrical subsystems (preferred)
  • Unigraphics NX or Pro/ENGINEER fluency desirable
  • Experience with labs and equipment to resolve issues
  • Experience with component modules (LCD, batteries, camera modules) and interconnects (FPC design and ACF bonding)
  • Self-motivated and willing to take on challenges to new technology
  • Strong work ethic, flexibility, and ability to operate in evolving environment
