About the role

Lead a high-impact team of MLEs, SWE, and data engineers to deliver efficient and effective Generative AI models for summarization across data types, on-device and on Apple Private Cloud Compute servers, with a focus on high-quality, grounded, safe summaries and real-time web-page gists.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the team of MLEs, SWE, and data engineers responsible for delivering efficient and effective Generative AI models to build and improve summarization capabilities across different data types
  • Drive end-to-end R&D and engineering to generate high-quality summaries and experiences for Apple users
  • Develop on-device LLM models for personal content summarization across first- and third-party apps, and summarization models on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers
  • Improve summarization model quality for world knowledge-seeking questions and Safari pages to provide accurate answers and highlight web page gists in real-time
  • Lead the development of SOTA LLM-based generative models, groundedness models, and safety models for accurate, grounded, concise, and safe summaries
  • Develop sophisticated on-device and on-server software frameworks for context integration, fast and cost-efficient LLM-based model inference
  • Integrate Apple ecosystem with Apple’s LLM infrastructure and generative models to deliver delightful user experiences
  • Devise product vision and strategy and execute plans to deliver high-quality end-user experiences
  • Collaborate with organizational partners to impact billions of Apple users worldwide

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in leading engineering/applied research/ML in natural language processing and SOTA generative AI models
  • Proven track record of delivering technology/products across the full ML life cycle
  • MS or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, information retrieval, data mining, or related field
  • Strong background and experience in Machine Learning, NLP, and RAG
  • Strong engineering and R&D experience in LLM post-training, RL-based methods to improve LLM safety and quality using RLHF/RLAIF, reward models, advanced RL policy optimization, hallucination reduction methods, and hands-on RL-based model development with high availability, low latency, robustness, and stability
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent product vision and business acumen; ability to manage long-term strategy and short-term deliverables
  • Strong engineering leadership and fundamentals
