About the role

Responsible for designing precision assembly and measurement processes for Apple products, performing R&D on new technologies to tackle complex assembly and automation problems, and driving scalable automated solutions from design through qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and scale automated and semi-automated solutions for assembly and measurement
  • Conduct R&D on new technologies to address complex automation problems
  • Develop new/improved processes using theoretical and practical engineering
  • Provide direction to third party suppliers/CMs; act as technical lead on owned projects
  • Organize cross-functional reviews of machine requirements, design, qualification and capability
  • Create RFQ/RFPs documenting design requirements, delivery schedules and qualification criteria
  • Engage machine suppliers for design reviews and proposals
  • Travel to machine suppliers/CMs for bring-up, qualification, acceptance testing and support
  • Drive machine qualification, CP/CPK, and GR&R
  • Perform failure analysis and issue resolution with suppliers/CMs
  • Travel internationally up to 30-35%
  • Run equipment experiments to bound capability
  • Prepare data analysis reports communicating machine capability to multi-functional teams
  • Design for Manufacturability; ensure mechanical manufacturability of new products
  • Provide production support engineering with respect to testing methods, procedures and failure analysis
  • Design and develop technically complex processes to improve quality and efficiency
  • Apply statistical tools (GR&R, SPC, Cp/Cpk) to ensure scalable processes/fixtures
  • Plan and implement testing procedures (DOE, Six Sigma) for upcoming products

Qualifications

  • BSME or equivalent
  • 5+ years in an engineering role with experience in automation equipment used for alignment, assembly and/or measurement of components
  • Strong experience in precision assembly, inspection and automation equipment
  • Ability to perform tolerance analysis for parts and assemblies
  • Knowledge of machine qualification requirements, design of experiments and failure analysis
  • Understanding of machine qualification including calibration, correlation, capability, repeatability and reproducibility
  • Effective communication in a global environment
  • New product introduction and Manufacturing Operations experience
  • Track record of cost reduction, project management and engineering design
  • Working knowledge of GD&T principles
  • NX, SolidWorks CAD or ProE a plus
  • Knowledge of optics principles related to CCD cameras, 2D/1D lasers for positioning and alignment
  • Basic understanding of liquid adhesives, PSA’s and VHB’s a plus
  • Solid understanding of robotics (6-axis and/or SCARA), pneumatics, servo motors, motion controllers, PLC and PC-based control systems
  • MP, Minitab & Six Sigma experience
