About the role

Software engineer role focused on developing an illumos-based host OS (Helios) for Oxide hardware, emphasizing kernel development, hardware interfacing, and end-to-end system design.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a team to design, build, and bring up host system software on Oxide computers
  • Read and write code in C (operating system), Rust (in-kernel components and higher-level services), and/or assembly
  • Grow understanding of microprocessors through hardware interaction and documentation
  • Contribute to security and resiliency by designing for failure from the ground up
  • Participate in rigorous code reviews to maintain production-ready software
  • Apply a customer-centric view to develop end-to-end features across the stack
  • Contribute to design of new Oxide hardware and software components elsewhere in the stack

Qualifications

  • Experience in operating systems kernel development
  • Versatility across core OS architecture, hardware interface, networking, and device development
  • Ability to work from first principles to solve problems
  • Experience interfacing with hardware with incomplete or inaccurate documentation
  • Strong debugging skills and documentation
  • Ability to document ideas for colleagues and self
  • Strong reading of technical documentation
  • Ability to develop tools for engineers
