About the role

Hands-on engineering role building and maintaining the evaluation platform for Apple's generative AI and agent systems. Collaborates with research, model/serving, product, infra, and data platform teams to productionize ML research, develop APIs/SDKs, orchestration components, and evaluation runners, and ensure robust, scalable production services.

Responsibilities

  • Build and ship: Take ownership of features and services within the evaluation platform: APIs, SDKs, orchestration components, evaluation runners.
  • Productionize ML research: Partner with research engineers to take their prototype code and turn it into reliable services.
  • Move fast, responsibly: Balance speed with care, decide when prototyping suffices and when to implement design docs, tests, and careful rollouts.
  • Improve as you go: Address flaky tests, slow builds, confusing APIs, and outdated runbooks to improve the codebase incrementally.
  • Developer experience: Build SDKs and abstractions for other Apple teams to evaluate models and agents.
  • Operational ownership: Write tests, set up CI, add metrics, and stay close when something breaks; not required to be an SRE but take care of what you ship.

Qualifications

  • 4-8 years of software engineering experience building and shipping production services.
  • Strong Python with FastAPI, Pydantic, and the modern Python ecosystem; clean, tested code.
  • Builder's mindset with ability to iterate quickly on scoped problems.
  • Fluency with AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code or equivalents) and agent-style workflows; good intuition on when to lean on them.
  • Familiarity with the agentic LLM landscape and production systems (tool use, MCP servers, agent frameworks, context management, multi-step reasoning).
  • Hands-on evaluation experience and familiarity with evaluation orchestration frameworks (e.g., Inspect, Braintrust, LangSmith, Promptfoo, or equivalents).
  • Real working knowledge of LLMs in production (prompt iteration, dataset curation, judge models, statistical reasoning for non-deterministic outputs).
  • Solid engineering fundamentals: testing, CI/CD, containerization (Docker), observability; shipped services others depend on.
  • Clear communicator, able to write clear PRs, ask sharp questions, discuss blockers, and adapt when convinced by better arguments.
  • Ownership mindset: proactive about fixing issues or surfacing them clearly.
