About the role

Apple Softgoods Engineering seeks a highly motivated Product Design Engineer to conceive, craft and produce new softgoods products. The role involves collaboration with US/Asia Product Designers and multiple cross-functional teams, with on-site support in China during prototype builds and potential travel. Emphasis on mechanical fundamentals, manufacturability, and development across textiles, polymers, and related materials.

Responsibilities

  • Develop designs rooted in solid mechanical engineering fundamentals, manufacturability (DFM), and assembly (DFA).
  • Create and iterate on detailed 3D CAD models and 2D technical drawings within NX.
  • Partner with Industrial Design, Product Design Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Operations throughout the product development cycle.
  • Collaborate with vendors to develop design and manufacturing processes; provide on-site support during prototype builds (primarily Mainland China). Travel may be required depending on factory location.
  • Perform dimensional and functional testing of prototype units while leading FACA on design-related issues from manufacturing or reliability testing.
  • Support technology investigations and development.
  • Present work clearly and concisely to leadership and cross-functional partners across multiple localities.

Qualifications

  • BS/MS/Ph.D in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering.
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals (beam bending, free body diagrams) and ability to creatively apply concepts to new problems.
  • 2D and 3D CAD software experience.
  • Experience using statistical tools and techniques for analytical problem solving.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Mandarin.
