About the role
Director-level role to build and lead the software engineering team as Radical AI scales its self-driving lab platform, balancing hands-on coding with team growth, culture, processes, and long-term technical direction.
Responsibilities
- Hire, develop, and retain a high-caliber software engineering team
- Establish rhythms: standups, planning, retrospectives, code review culture
- Be the technical mentor and growth partner for engineers
- Conduct daily code reviews; submit 1–3 PRs per week
- Drive and participate in architectural discussions and decisions
- Maintain fluency to debug production issues and challenge proposals
- Build and own the long-term software development roadmap
- Translate ambiguous requirements into clear technical strategy
- Navigate tradeoffs between speed, correctness, and scale
- Be a credible technical voice in leadership discussions
- Interface with product, science, and hardware stakeholders to understand customer-centric needs
Qualifications
- 10+ years of software engineering experience
- 3+ years in an engineering management or technical lead role
- Hands-on coding experience (still hands-on)
- Strong systems thinking for distributed systems under constraints
- Experience growing and stabilizing engineering teams in fast-moving environments
- Fluency in Go and/or Python
- Proven ability to establish processes that increase speed without bureaucracy
- Based in or willing to relocate to New York City; in-person presence required
