About the role

Help shape the next generation of generative AI at Apple. We’re hiring data scientists to apply product data science to the safety of Apple Intelligence, supporting generative AI features from early development through production, with a focus on quality, safety, fairness, inclusion, and user privacy.

Responsibilities

  • Uncover and characterize safety weaknesses for red teaming
  • Ground evaluations in real-world usage signal
  • Measure in-production performance of mitigations (overrides, guardrail models, base model safety alignment)
  • Apply data science across scientific investigation, interpretation, cross-functional collaboration, and clear communication of results
  • Framing research and business questions and answering them with appropriate statistical tools on real-world data
  • Communicate findings effectively to data scientists, engineers, and executive partners

Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, or related field; or equivalent experience
  • Strong foundation in data science, analytics, and machine learning (statistical analysis, A/B testing, full experiment lifecycle)
  • Strong programming skills in Python and at least one data-querying language (SQL, Spark, or similar)
  • Comfort with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Codex, or Copilot)
  • Track record of framing research/business questions and answering with appropriate statistical tools on messy real-world data
  • Excellent technical communication skills, especially for causal reasoning
  • Willingness to work with highly sensitive material (including offensive content)
  • Experience in Responsible AI
  • Experience with usage data from AI-powered products and understanding how systems fail
  • Record of scientific research/publication
  • Curiosity about fairness and bias in generative AI and drive to improve equity
