About the role

Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) at Xata, a hybrid pre-sales and technical delivery role focused on technical discovery, proof-of-value engagements, and customer migrations onto Xata. You will be the technical force guiding how customers evaluate, adopt, and succeed with Xata, building playbooks, tooling, and demo infrastructure to scale the function as the team grows.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical discovery with developers, platform teams, and AI-native companies.
  • Design and run proof-of-value engagements that prove Xata against customer data and constraints, delivering a clear technical outcome.
  • Guide and execute database migrations onto Xata using open-source tooling (pgroll, pgstream) and build missing tooling as needed.
  • Build assets for credibility: demo environments, reference architectures, migration scripts, and integration patterns for branching, replication, and lifecycle management.
  • Be the technical voice in the deal cycle, collaborating with GTM and handling hard technical objections.
  • Embed with customers and write code with them to prioritize outcomes over artifacts.
  • Close the loop with Product and Engineering to feed back field signals for improvements across Data Plane, Control Plane, and Frontend teams.
  • Set the technical bar and build playbooks, demo infrastructure, and engagement model for scale.

Qualifications

  • Strong, hands-on engineer energized by customer interaction.
  • Generalist problem-solver with experience across full-stack, data plumbing, scripting, debugging, and infrastructure.
  • Credible with engineers; comfortable with databases, SQL, APIs, distributed systems, and developer workflows.
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity with high ownership; ability to ship and drive adoption from idea to implementation.
  • Bias to build when something is missing.
  • Clear written communication and ability to work effectively in a remote, async environment.
  • Willingness to be the first and only person in this seat, building the function from the ground up.
