About the role

Applied Research Engineer to advance Sakana AI’s mission by conducting research and development on core AI technologies behind products, including model training, evaluation, and product development spanning UI/UX, backend, and infrastructure; collaborates in a bilingual global team.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver innovative solutions to customers using state-of-the-art AI technologies
  • Develop a deep understanding of the customer’s domain, define a path to solving their problems, and work directly with them
  • Define requirements and propose technical approaches for tackling ambiguous problems in a rapidly evolving technical landscape
  • Research and develop highly impactful AI technologies that sit at the heart of our products
  • Train, evaluate, and improve LLMs using our data assets, and accumulate and share the resulting knowledge within the company
  • Explore the productization of Sakana AI’s research, technologies, and solutions
  • Collaborate within a global team working in both Japanese and English

Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with generative AI technologies such as LLMs and AI agents
  • Knowledge, experience, or interest in multiple areas including: AI agent workflows and multi-agent systems; AI agent foundational technologies (e.g., Deep Research, Computer Use); tools around AI agents (function calling, MCP, A2A); RAG systems and search engines; document understanding with images using VLMs and OCR; practical safe AI operation including hallucination countermeasures, fact-checking, citation, guardrails; benchmarking and continuous evaluation; self-improving systems like meta agents; open-ended exploration with AI agents; RL and supervised/unsupervised learning; end-to-end data science process; AI-assisted coding tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Devin, Claude Code)
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, machine learning, or related field; degrees in physics, mathematics, business, economics, or law are pluses
