About the role
Merge Labs seeks a Facilities Operations role to own the end-to-end lifecycle of the R&D environment, including lab and office infrastructure, safety/compliance, procurement, and logistics, enabling scientists and engineers to work efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Keep the physical site ready for science and daily work, owning hands-on upkeep of lab, office, and shared spaces, including walkthroughs, janitorial coordination, space moves, facility equipment management, physical security touchpoints, and first-pass repairs.
- Serve as the first line of defense for lab equipment issues, troubleshooting and self-repairing where appropriate, coordinating service when needed, and ensuring critical lab equipment stays available and ready.
- Support lab utility systems (vacuum, compressed air, RODI, autoclaves, dishwashers, and related infrastructure) by monitoring, maintaining, and coordinating service.
- Own the practical flow of goods through the site, including shipping, receiving, unpacking, logging, internal movement, and storage to prevent delays or losses.
- Maintain the physical condition of the office and lab environment by coordinating repairs (patching, painting, sinks, doors, bathrooms, carpet, elevators, fixtures, etc.).
- Coordinate facilities vendors and trades (janitorial, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical service, elevator support, kitchen equipment, plants, signage, etc.).
- Support workplace operations for a growing team (desk planning, office moves, food/kitchen operations, signage, Zoom room coordination with IT, physical security, day-to-day operations).
- Help execute small facilities projects and buildout work (electrical modifications, minor construction, furniture changes, office reconfigurations, future lab/office buildouts).
- Support internal events and site moments (setup, vendor coordination, space readiness, cleanup, logistics).
- Build operating discipline behind Facilities and Lab Operations (vendor lists, maintenance records, equipment notes, service histories, recurring checklists).
Qualifications
- Hands-on facilities or lab operations experience, ideally in wet lab, R&D, biotech, life sciences, manufacturing or equipment-heavy environments.
- Strong mechanical instinct with ability to troubleshoot, repair, adjust, move, mount, assemble, patch, and diagnose physical problems; know when to escalate to a vendor.
- Comfort working in a lab environment with equipment uptime, clean spaces, reliable utilities, cold storage, and material management.
- Good judgment coordinating building systems and vendors; ability to follow up, compare options, and ensure work gets done.
- Bias toward order and preventive maintenance; experience with checklists, vendor rosters, service records, asset notes, and maintenance schedules.
- Resourcefulness and common sense to operate under imperfect conditions and triage priorities.
- Service mindset with initiative to improve environments rather than just responding to requests.
- Technical literacy to operate modern lab and facilities systems (spreadsheets, asset databases, ticketing systems, BMS, vendor portals, inventory tools, documentation).
- Flexibility across a range of tasks including lab equipment, utilities, vendor coordination, shipping/receiving, office moves, signage, repairs, events, and future buildouts.
