About the role

Mech engineer on Field AI's Hardware Team designing and implementing mechanical systems for sensing and compute platforms in real-world robotics, spanning enclosure design, thermal management, mounts, production readiness, and cross-domain collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Mechanical System Design: Structures (external enclosures, internal compute frames, load-bearing chassis); Mounts (sensor mounts, payload interfaces); Ingress Protection (gaskets, seals, coatings); Thermal Management (fans, heat sinks, airflow); Mass & Volume Budgets (payload constraints)
  • Mechanical System Implementation: CAD & Simulation (SolidWorks assemblies, FEA, thermal simulations); Material & Component Selection; Design for Production (DFM, DFA, DFS); System Testing (mechanical load, thermal, ingress, sensor alignment); Prototyping; Documentation & Budgets (drawings, GD&T, BOMs, assembly instructions)
  • Mechanical System Production & Servicing: Build with vendors/CMs; QA checks for incoming units; Support payload integration and scaling; Debug mechanical failures; Monitor mechanical health and loads

Qualifications

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD
  • Familiarity with FEA and thermal modeling tools
  • Experience designing hardware for vibration, shock, thermal cycling, and environmental exposure
  • Experience designing for CNC, sheet metal, additive manufacturing, and assembly workflows
  • Experience integrating mechanical systems with compute, sensors, and power electronics
  • Lab skills including mechanical debugging, thermal test setups, vibration tables, ingress testing
  • Cross-functional robotic skills enabling contribution across electrical, sensing, and embedded computing teams
