About the role
Sensor Systems Engineer on FieldAI’s Hardware Team responsible for design, integration, calibration, and validation of sensing systems (LiDAR, depth cameras, IMUs, GPS, etc.) to support autonomous robotics in real-world environments.
Responsibilities
- Sensor Architecture: Define sensing requirements across hardware and software to select sensors (LiDARs, depth cameras, GPS, IMUs, ToF, etc.).
- Systems Integration: Integrate sensors with electrical, mechanical, and software systems (USB, Ethernet, I2C, CAN, GMSL; mounts; ROS nodes).
- Spatial Performance: Ensure spatial sampling performance (coverage, range, resolution, transform accuracy).
- Temporal Performance: Implement synchronization strategies, triggering, timestamp encoding, and end-to-end latency minimization.
- Performance Characterization: Evaluate sensor performance under real-world conditions (vibration, lighting, moisture, temperature).
- Calibration: Design and execute intrinsic and extrinsic calibrations; build rigs and boards.
- Optimization: Tune sensor configurations and processing pipelines for optimal performance.
- Documentation: Create timing diagrams, sensor maps, coordinate transforms; maintain configuration files, launch scripts, drivers, and firmware states.
- Build & Servicing: Collaborate with vendors, develop QA for incoming units, support payload integration and manufacturing at scale.
- Debug: Conduct root cause analyses across hardware and software boundaries.
- Monitoring: Develop protocols for monitoring health, data quality, and calibration status in field deployments.
Qualifications
- B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, or related field.
- Experience across a wide range of experience levels from entry to senior/staff engineers.
- Hands-on experience with perception sensors (LiDAR, depth cameras, IMUs, GPS).
- Systems thinking with cross-functional collaboration across electrical, mechanical, and software teams.
- Strong foundation in optics, signal processing, and electromagnetic wave propagation.
- Lab skills: testing, calibration, debugging (oscilloscopes, logs, vibration/thermal setups).
- Experience with USB, Ethernet, GMSL, CAN, I2C, and CSI protocols.
- Experience with ROS/ROS2, sensor drivers, coordinate transforms (TF), and timing protocols (PTP, NTP).
- Experience with timestamping, synchronization, triggering, and latency constraints.
- Experience designing/executing intrinsic, extrinsic, and temporal calibrations; sensor characterization in real-world conditions.
- Experience with high-fidelity simulations (Gazebo, Isaac Sim, RViz) for sensor modeling.
