About the role

Sensor Systems Engineer to design, integrate, calibrate, and validate sensing systems for autonomous wheeled robotic platforms across federal and commercial programs. Focus on LiDARs, depth cameras, IMUs, GPS, and related sensors; collaborate across hardware and software teams to ensure synchronized, accurate data and robust field deployments.

Responsibilities

  • Sensor System Design: Define sensing requirements and select sensors (LiDARs, depth cameras, GPS, IMUs, ToF and other devices).
  • Systems Integration: Integrate sensors with electrical, mechanical, and software systems; ensure power, thermal, and protocol compatibility.
  • Spatial Performance: Architect systems to meet spatial sampling performance (coverage, range, resolution, transform accuracy).
  • Temporal Performance: Implement synchronization strategies, triggering, timestamp encoding, and end-to-end latency minimization.
  • Sensor System Implementation: Performance characterization under real-world conditions; calibration (intrinsic and extrinsic); optimize configurations and processing pipelines; documentation of timing diagrams, sensor maps, transforms, and configuration files.
  • Sensor System Production & Servicing: Build with vendors, develop QA checks, support payload integration and manufacturing at scale; debug root causes; monitor health and data quality during deployments.

Qualifications

  • B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, or related field
  • Hands-on sensors experience with LiDAR, depth cameras, IMUs, GPS
  • Systems thinking with cross-functional collaboration across electrical, mechanical, and software teams
  • Strong foundation in optics, signal processing, and electromagnetic wave propagation
  • Lab skills with oscilloscopes, logs, vibration/thermal setups
  • Experience with USB, Ethernet, GMSL, CAN, I2C, CSI
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2, sensor drivers, coordinate transforms (TF), timing protocols (PTP, NTP)
  • Experience with timestamping, synchronization, triggering, latency constraints
  • Calibration expertise (intrinsic, extrinsic, temporal) and sensor characterization in real-world conditions
  • Simulation experience (Gazebo, Isaac Sim, RViz)
