International Engineering Lead - Intelligence Features

About the role

Lead international ML engineering efforts to design, implement, and evaluate globally relevant intelligence features across Apple platforms (iOS, macOS, watchOS, etc.). Focus on internationalization/localization, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and exploration/application of large language models to improve international customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with feature teams to own and drive the international customer experience for intelligence features
  • Providing leadership to and directing the work of engineers, project managers, language experts, quality engineers, and others
  • Regularly assessing feature internationalization readiness and progress
  • Authoring weekly executive status updates and representing international engineering in leadership meetings
  • Reviewing and driving statistical evaluation improvements across locales
  • Advocating for international customer needs and international ML best practices in cross-functional and leadership meetings
  • Communicating with other International Engineering Leads and project managers to seek efficiencies and share tooling and data
  • Building tools and prototypes to drive intelligence features forward at scale
  • Improving evaluation processes and tooling
  • Leading exploration and application of Large Language Models (LLMs) for localization/internationalization tasks
  • Engaging in end-to-end intelligence feature engineering from ideation to shipping
  • Mentoring other engineers and colleagues

Qualifications

  • BS, MS or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Machine Learning (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience leading large cross-functional software engineering projects with significant international impact
  • Experience with Machine Learning (ML), emphasizing Large Language Models (LLMs) and NLP
  • Proven ability to apply cutting-edge research to consumer-oriented products
  • Experience influencing cross-functional and cross-cultural partners at multiple levels, including senior leadership
  • Experience writing clear executive status updates
  • Proficiency with open-source ML toolkits and frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow)
  • Fluency in Generative AI tools to build prototypes, data pipelines, and scale workflows
  • Strong programming skills in Python, Swift, C or C++
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
  • Experience in software localization/internationalization
  • Experience adapting pre-trained LLMs for downstream tasks
  • Experience using GenAI to prototype solutions and data sets
  • Familiarity with localization standards and technologies (Unicode, XLIFF, ICU, etc.)
  • Fluent foreign language skills (reading, writing, speaking)
  • Knowledge of Computational Linguistics
  • Experience using Xcode to build software for Apple platforms
  • Proficiency with Apple development APIs (SwiftUI, Foundation, etc.)
  • Deep understanding of languages and culture outside your own
