About the role
Staff Compute Engineer role focused on leading the design and implementation of the next-generation compute solution for Apptronik's humanoid robot platform, with emphasis on real-time performance, sensor bandwidth, functional safety, and integration with SoMs like NVIDIA Orin.
Responsibilities
- Lead the architectural design of the robot's next-generation compute solution, from high-level system architecture to component-level selection.
- Define and validate compute requirements based on robotics algorithms (motion control, perception, AI tasks).
- Develop a robust and scalable solution for high-bandwidth sensor data.
- Design for functional safety with redundant systems, fail-safe mechanisms, and diagnostics to meet safety standards.
- Collaborate with software, electrical, and systems engineers for seamless integration of the compute solution.
- Conduct performance benchmarking and power analysis for efficiency and thermal management.
- Design, simulate, implement, and test multi-layer high-speed PCBs for SoMs (e.g., NVIDIA Orin).
- Lead high-speed signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI) analysis, modeling, and validation.
- Understand compute power requirements, power trees, PMICs, and sequencing.
- Drive selection and qualification of SoMs, memory, storage, high-speed interconnects, and peripherals.
- Develop validation/test plans (DVT/PVT), design test fixtures, and ensure regulatory compliance (FCC, CE).
- Stay abreast of embedded systems, RTOS, and robotics compute hardware to inform decisions.
- Own the lifecycle of complex compute hardware from concept to production and support.
- Mentor electrical engineering team on hardware design and troubleshooting.
Qualifications
- Proven experience architecting and shipping complex, high-performance compute solutions for robotics or autonomous systems.
- Deep understanding of functional safety principles and standards (e.g., IEC 61508) and safety-critical design experience.
- Expertise with compute platforms including NVIDIA Jetson, Intel, and other high-performance embedded systems.
- Strong knowledge of RTOS, multi-core processing, and communication protocols (Ethernet, CAN).
- Experience with sensor bandwidth management and high-speed data transfer.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and collaborative approach to engineering.
- Experience with humanoid robotics is a significant plus.
