Senior Operating Systems / Hypervisor Engineer
Remote$0Full-timePosted 3mo ago
About the role
Role focused on building WASIX, an OS emulation layer for WebAssembly, including syscall semantics, process and threading models, virtual filesystems, and networking atop Wasmer. Involves contributing to the Wasmer runtime and porting Unix software to WASIX, with open-source impact and a remote, senior team environment.
Responsibilities
- WASIX itself — designing and implementing syscall semantics, process and threading models, virtual filesystems, and networking stacks on top of WebAssembly.
- The Wasmer runtime — the sandboxing, scheduling, and memory-management machinery that enables thousands of Wasm processes to run safely and efficiently on a host (hypervisor-like challenges at a different stack).
- Porting and running battle-tested Unix software (curl, bash, PostgreSQL-class programs) unmodified on WASIX and fixing issues.
- Open source contributions — a significant portion of work shipping publicly in Wasmer’s repositories.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of systems-level engineering experience, with real-world work on Linux internals, hypervisors (KVM, Xen, Firecracker, etc.), or comparable low-level runtimes.
- Genuine, self-driven interest in OS and hypervisor design; opinions about scheduler behavior, memory models, or syscall interfaces and ability to defend them.
- Proven Rust experience; fluent C and ability to work with large, unfamiliar codebases.
- Strong POSIX knowledge: processes, signals, sockets, file descriptors, memory management.
Skills
Required:RustCPOSIX
Benefits
- Competitive salary and stock options.
- Generous vacation policy.
- Flexible and remote work policies.
- Monthly fitness stipend.
- Monthly stipend for open-source contributions.

About Wasmer
The Operating System for Edge Computing
We are working on the software that will power the next generation of Cloud Computing (Edge Computing) platforms using WebAssembly. You can see us as a mix between Docker (but 100x more performant in startup time, and with 100x more lightweight containers), npm (we released the first WebAssembly package manager: wapm.io) and the JVM (but more universal).
