About the role

Reality Capture & Sensor Payload Engineer role on Field AI's Hardware Team. You will design, integrate, calibrate, and validate sensor modules to turn robots into data-collection platforms, supporting field deployments in industries like construction and manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Sensor Selection & Evaluation: Evaluate and select sensors for reality capture and mapping (LiDAR, depth cameras, GNSS/RTK, PTZ/thermal cameras) based on accuracy, range, and point density.
  • Insights & Customer Alignment: Partner with Product and engage directly with customers to align data requirements with physical constraints.
  • Custom Systems: Propose custom sensor solutions when needed, evaluating COTS versus custom LiDAR or multi-camera systems.
  • Calibration & Time Sync: Own multi-sensor calibration (intrinsics, extrinsics, boresight, timing across LiDAR and multi-camera systems).
  • Mechanical & Electrical Integration: Design integration unit to mount sensors on the robot within SWaP-C constraints.
  • Ruggedization: Own mounting/enclosure design, IP ratings, ruggedization for harsh field conditions.
  • Data Pipelines: Build/maintain pipelines turning sensor captures into registered, georeferenced point clouds and photogrammetric reconstructions.
  • Testing & Validation: Validate sensor performance, calibration accuracy, and point cloud repeatability under real-world conditions including vibration and lighting.
  • Production Quality: Support quality checks and production consistency for ruggedized sensor modules across robots.
  • Systems-Level Optimization: Act as systems-level owner to avoid siloed solutions and optimize across domains.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Coordination: Connect Autonomy, Insights, Mechanical, and Electrical teams to align sensor payload decisions.
  • Team Leadership & Roadmap: Mentor junior engineers and contribute to sensor/hardware roadmap and vendor strategy.

Qualifications

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or related field.
  • 9+ years of experience for senior to staff-level role (considering more junior candidates with the right profile).
  • Cross-domain engineering foundation across mechanical design, electrical design, and sensor hardware.
  • Working knowledge of point cloud and signal processing to evaluate software-based hardware solutions.
  • Systems-level optimization experience across engineering domains.
  • Deep familiarity with LiDAR, cameras, thermal imaging, and gas detection sensors.
  • Mechatronics & integration experience: mounting, enclosures, IP ratings, ruggedized payload connectors.
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills to arbitrate between teams.
  • Leadership experience mentoring junior engineers.
