About the role

Engineering Manager for the Crawl Infrastructure team responsible for operating a petabyte-scale web crawl powering Siri, Apple Intelligence, Spotlight, and foundation models. Leads distributed systems engineers, defines technical roadmap, and ensures reliability, scale, and alignment with Apple's AI and search initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a group of distributed systems engineers building and operating one of Apple's most complex data collection platforms.
  • Own the architectural vision for a multi-service pipeline and translate real-world knowledge requirements into engineering solutions.
  • Build and operate a production-grade web crawl infrastructure at scale (billions of operations per day).
  • Partner with downstream product and ML teams to align infrastructure investments with strategic AI and search initiatives.
  • Balance reliability improvements, feature velocity, and platform scalability in the technical roadmap.
  • Engage in production incident war rooms, stakeholder meetings, and system design reviews.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years of engineering management experience leading distributed systems engineers in a production environment.
  • Track record of managing senior engineers, setting technical direction, running design reviews, and raising the bar on engineering quality.
  • Ability to drive large, multi-quarter projects end-to-end (scoping, sequencing, staffing, delivering against a roadmap).
  • Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems (personally designed, built, and operated).
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure at scale (AWS or equivalent), Kubernetes, IaC tooling.
  • Familiarity with data pipeline infrastructure (streaming with Flink, batch with Spark) and columnar storage (Iceberg or equivalent).
  • Strong programming background in one of Rust, Scala, or Go (preferred).
  • BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
