Controls Engineer, Data Center Engineering
About the role
Data Center Controls Engineer to design, implement, and optimize automation and control systems across electrical power, mechanical systems, and the Data Center Information System (DCIS) for Apple’s global data center infrastructure. Role spans design, construction administration, commissioning, and ongoing operational improvement with emphasis on specification authorship and cross-domain technical leadership.
Responsibilities
- Design data center automation and control systems for electrical infrastructure (EPMS, MV Power Distribution Control Systems, LV transfer schemes) and mechanical infrastructure (BAS, chilled water plants, cooling towers, CRAC/CRAH units, air handling units, pumping systems, airside economizers).
- Author, own, and continuously improve control system specifications and sequences of operations; write from scratch for new systems and scopes; iterate based on lessons learned, RFIs/change orders, and feedback from internal teams, GCs, and vendors; review project controls drawings developed by EORs.
- Configure and program PLCs, PACs, and DDC controllers, or provide technical oversight of third parties across electrical and mechanical control platforms.
- Support the DCIS platform by integrating electrical and mechanical data into the Ignition-based HMI over MQTT for cohesive operator experience across control domains.
- Provide commissioning oversight of electrical and mechanical control systems to ensure validation and readiness for handoff to operations.
- Troubleshoot controls and monitoring issues across domains using data, fault detection and diagnostics (FDD), and implement corrective actions to protect facility reliability.
- Serve as technical liaison between design teams, A&E consultants, vendors, contractors, and operations to ensure high-quality deliverables on schedules.
- Provide training and mentorship to Operations on control systems and DCIS; support emergency response during significant facility incidents.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of engineering experience with control systems in data centers or mission-critical environments for electrical power and mechanical/HVAC systems.
- Understanding of controls for high-availability electrical systems (EPMS, MV PDCS) and mechanical systems (chilled water plants, BAS).
- Experience programming DDC/PLC controllers and redlining controls drawings.
