About the role

Data Center Controls Engineer responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing automation and control systems across electrical and mechanical data center infrastructure, with emphasis on DCIS integration, cross-domain leadership, and lifecycle delivery from design to commissioning.

Responsibilities

  • Design of data center automation and control systems for electrical infrastructure (EPMS, MV Power Distribution Control Systems, LV transfer schemes) and mechanical infrastructure (BAS, chilled water plants, cooling towers, CRAC/CRAH units, air handling units, pumping systems, airside economizers).
  • Author, own, and continuously improve control system specifications and sequences of operations; review project controls drawings.
  • Configuration and programming of PLCs, PACs, and DDC controllers, or oversight of third parties.
  • Support the DCIS platform by integrating electrical and mechanical system data into the Ignition-based HMI over MQTT.
  • Commissioning oversight of electrical and mechanical control systems; ensure validation and design intent before handoff.
  • Troubleshoot controls and monitoring issues; analyze data, apply fault detection and diagnostics (FDD).
  • Serve as technical liaison between design teams, A&E, vendors, contractors, and operations; drive high-quality deliverables.
  • Provide training and mentorship to Operations personnel on control systems and DCIS; support emergency response during incidents.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience with control systems in data centers or mission-critical environments for electrical power and mechanical/HVAC systems.
  • Understanding of controls for high-availability electrical systems (EPMS, MV PDCS) and mechanical systems (chilled water plants, BAS).
  • Experience programming DDC/PLC controllers and redlining controls drawings.
  • 8+ years of experience with data center control systems; involvement across design, construction, and commissioning for electrical and mechanical control scope.
  • Proficiency in IEC 61131-3 programming languages (Structured Text, Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, Instruction List).
  • Experience authoring and maintaining technical control system specifications and Sequences of Operations (SOO); MV PDCS specs preferred.
  • Track record reducing RFIs and change orders through high-quality control specifications.
  • Experience with Schneider Electric Modicon M580; Siemens Desigo / S7; Johnson Controls Metasys; Tridium Niagara (JACE); SEL RTAC; generator controllers (Woodward easYgen, DEIF AGC).
  • Experience with BACnet, Modbus, OPC UA, IEC 61850 (MMS/GOOSE); integration with facility management and monitoring platforms.
  • Experience with DCIS stacks including MQTT, Ignition, cloud analytics integration; data aggregation across electrical and mechanical domains.
  • Familiarity with IEC 61499 event-driven Function Block, Python for data analysis/integration, Fault Detection and Diagnostics (FDD), data trending, alarming; version control (GitHub, GitLab).
  • Proficiency with AI tools to enhance specifications, control logic development, and predictive analytics over DCIS/MQTT.
