About the role
Harmattan AI is seeking an Aerodynamic Engineer to design, validate, and continuously improve the flight physics of autonomous defense platforms. The role covers conceptual aerodynamic design, simulation, physical testing, and Python tooling, with collaboration across Mechanical and GNC teams.
Responsibilities
- Aerodynamic Design & Analysis: Contribute to the aerodynamic layout and analysis of fixed-wing, multicopter, and eVTOL configurations, using low-fidelity methods (XFoil, OpenVSP, AVL) and higher-fidelity CFD as needed.
- Testing & Validation: Support flight test and/or wind tunnel campaigns, define test cards, instrument prototypes, and run experiments to validate simulations against real data.
- Python Tooling & Automation: Write Python to automate analysis workflows, process test/flight data, and integrate design and simulation tools into an end-to-end pipeline.
- Aero Database Generation: Generate and maintain aerodynamic databases and stability derivatives for GNC-based control law development and autopilot tuning.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with Mechanical and GNC teams to ensure aerodynamic choices are feasible, stable, and testable throughout the design cycle.
Qualifications
- B.S. or M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or related field with coursework or project experience in aerodynamics or flight mechanics.
- Solid grasp of aerodynamic fundamentals (lift, drag, stability) and flight dynamics, with practical intuition for design behavior.
- Python proficiency (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas) to process data, automate analyses, and glue tools together.
- Experience with at least one validation path (aerodynamic simulation: CFD, XFoil, OpenVSP, AVL, or physical testing: wind tunnel, flight test, prototyping).
- CAD familiarity and ability to navigate/edit in SolidWorks or CATIA to understand geometry constraints and communicate with Mechanical team.
- Pragmatic, hands-on mindset; comfortable working across the full design-to-validation loop in a small, fast-moving team.
