About the role

Backend Engineer responsible for building and scaling Kotlin-based backend microservices, with emphasis on geolocation and location services within Better Places’ core delivery platform.

Responsibilities

  • Building and taking end-to-end ownership of new features across Kotlin-based backend microservices
  • Deploying features and scaling systems via Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • Partnering with product owners, fellow engineers, and cross-functional teams to clarify requirements, clear blockers, and drive initiatives forward
  • Jumping into a dynamic team environment to refine engineering practices and shape tribe/product transformation as backend architecture evolves
  • Looking beyond existing solutions to identify architectural bottlenecks and drive meaningful improvements

Qualifications

  • A background in computer science and software engineering, including a minimum of 3 years of backend experience
  • Proficiency in Kotlin or deep production experience in Java with a strong affinity for Kotlin, plus Spring Boot and Gradle
  • Skilled in architectural design for fault-tolerant, high-throughput distributed systems
  • Hands-on cloud experience with AWS and IaC tools such as Terraform or Pulumi
  • Commitment to clean code and engineering best practices (RESTful/API design, Git, maintainable documentation)
  • Hands-on, data-driven mindset with ability to challenge status quo and bring distinct perspectives
  • Proficiency in Business English
