About the role

Span seeks a Platform Engineer to build internal platforms, tooling, and systems that help engineering teams move faster, ship reliably, and reduce operational overhead. The role focuses on creating an internal developer platform, improving developer experience, and leveraging AI/LLMs to automate platform operations and workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Build AI-powered platform tooling that identifies root causes of recurring operational work (KTLO), automates repetitive tasks, and recommends long-term engineering improvements.
  • Create an internal developer platform including a software catalog, service ownership model, and engineering portal that teams actually enjoy using, whether they're working in microservices or monoliths.
  • Improve developer experience by building workflows, automation, and self-service infrastructure that reduce cognitive load, streamline onboarding, and eliminate common sources of engineering friction.
  • Leverage LLMs and AI agents to automate platform operations, incident response, documentation, engineering support, and developer workflows.
  • Partner closely with engineering teams to identify platform gaps, improve reliability, and build scalable infrastructure that enables product teams to focus on delivering customer value.

Qualifications

  • Resourceful engineers who thrive in high-agency, fast-moving environments.
  • Experience building platform engineering, developer infrastructure, DevEx, SRE, or internal tooling.
  • You've been an early engineering hire, founder, or have built and shipped meaningful side projects from scratch.
  • Strong systems thinking with a passion for improving engineering productivity through thoughtful tooling and automation.
  • Experience building with LLMs, AI agents, and agentic workflows to solve real engineering problems.
  • Comfortable working across infrastructure, backend systems, and developer tooling.
