About the role

Engineering Manager leading a backend engineering team building and scaling distributed systems powering Apple Card and Apple Savings. Responsible for technical leadership, roadmaps, and collaboration with product/design/partner teams to deliver high-quality software at scale in a financial services context.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of backend engineers working on Apple Card and Apple Savings features and infrastructure.
  • Drive architectural decisions across distributed systems, ensuring solutions meet scale, performance, and reliability requirements.
  • Establish engineering best practices around code quality, testing, and operational excellence to support high-stakes financial products.
  • Partner with product managers, operations, and cross-functional engineering teams to define technical roadmaps and deliver against them.
  • Translate complex business and regulatory requirements into clear, achievable engineering plans.
  • Champion a culture of quality — setting high standards for design reviews, code reviews, and incident response organizations.
  • Communicate technical strategy, team progress, and risks clearly to senior leadership and partner.
  • Recruit, onboard, and retain engineering talent to scale the team effectively.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience building and operating large-scale distributed backend systems environment.
  • Proven experience managing and growing a team of software engineers in a fast-paced product.
  • Deep expertise in Java or Kotlin, with hands-on experience designing services for scale and performance.
  • Strong background in cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, and API design.
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases and high-throughput messaging systems (e.g., Kafka, SQS, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to drive cross-functional collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Track record of delivering high-quality software on time in ambiguous, rapidly evolving environments.
  • Exceptional communication skills — able to convey technical complexity clearly to both engineering teams, partners and executive stakeholders.
