About the role

Staff Electrical Engineer to architect electronics and FPGA for Apollo’s sensor bridge, owning end-to-end electrical and FPGA stack from requirements to production. Collaborates with perception team to enable sight and safety functions for Apollo robotics.

Responsibilities

  • Electronics & FPGA Architect from Concept to Production: own requirements definition, part selection, schematic capture, layout guidance, and RTL architecture for a multi-Gbps, mixed-signal PCBA; manage design from architecture through prototype, validation, and manufacturing release; produce design documentation.
  • High-Speed & Mixed-Signal Hardware Design: design/validate high-speed digital interfaces (CSI-2, GMSL2/FPD-Link/PoC, 10GbE); signal integrity, impedance control, length-matching; architect power tree, EMI/ESD/thermal considerations.
  • FPGA Device Selection, Architecture, and RTL Development: define FPGA device selection, architecture; develop RTL (VHDL/Verilog) for CSI-2 ingest, Ethernet packetization, timestamp/metadata insertion, and camera synchronization; manage timing closure, clock-domain crossing, resource/power budgeting; integrate high-speed transceivers and external PHYs.
  • Validation, Bring-Up, and Debugging: develop/execute validation plans; build test fixtures; use lab equipment to validate latency, bandwidth, synchronization; debug hardware/RTL boundary issues with root-cause analysis.
  • Lifecycle Management & Vendor Alignment: own component lifecycle through PLM; manage hardware vendors/CMs for production scaling and DFM/DFA.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: work with technical leads, PMs, software, mechanical, thermal, systems, and manufacturing; mentor junior engineers.
  • Technical Leadership: drive project execution, define component roadmaps, lead debugging/root-cause analysis, align implementations with company goals, and drive stakeholder consensus.

Qualifications

  • Strong depth in FPGA hardware design for time-sensitive, high-performance applications (image processing, high-speed data acquisition, real-time networking)
  • FPGA device selection and architecture definition
  • RTL development in VHDL and/or Verilog
  • High-speed interface design (CSI-2, GMSL/SerDes, Ethernet, PCIe)
  • Timing closure, clock-domain crossing, resource optimization
  • Integration of high-speed transceivers and external PHYs
  • FPGA tool flows (Vivado, Quartus, or Lattice Radiant) and simulation
  • Deep understanding of signal integrity, impedance-controlled routing, differential pairs, stack-up, timing across board-FPGA boundary
  • Camera/image sensor hardware experience (SerDes, MIPI CSI-2, ISP integration)
  • Ethernet-based sensor streaming and sensor bridges experience
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving with hands-on testing
  • Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and ship in fast-paced environments
  • Travel up to 10% (US/international)
