About the role

Senior Perception Hardware Engineer focusing on Sensor Calibration responsible for aligning the robot's multi-modal perception sensors with the autonomy stack, designing calibration hardware, developing calibration algorithms, and building scalable factory and field processes.

Responsibilities

  • Define and implement robust intrinsic models for optical sensors (e.g., pinhole, fisheye, Brown-Conrady, Kannala-Brandt) and inertial sensors (bias, scale factors, random walk).
  • Develop highly accurate extrinsic sensor-to-sensor and sensor-to-kinematic base transformations.
  • Ensure sub-microsecond synchronization across perception streams using PTP, PPS, and hardware triggering.
  • Design precision calibration fixtures and lighting environments for high-repeatability factory calibration (e.g., CharuCo boards).
  • Collaborate on mounting rigidity validation and characterize calibration drift due to thermal gradients, mechanical shock, and joint wear.
  • Build automated End-of-Line calibration pipeline for multi-sensor humanoid head enabling rapid calibration by non-engineers.
  • Develop lightweight auto-calibration / self-diagnostic routines for online/field sensor drift detection and dynamic extrinsic transform adjustment.
  • Establish data-tracking architecture to monitor fleet-wide calibration health and degradation across hardware.
  • Translate autonomy requirements into hardware and calibration tolerances.

Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • 5+ years in perception hardware, computer vision, or robotics with focus on sensor calibration and validation.

Skills

Required:Mathematical foundations (3D geometry, linear algebra, SE(3))Programming (Python, C++)Computer vision libraries (OpenCV, PCL)Optimization frameworks (Ceres Solver, g2o)Hardware intuition (optical components, LiDAR, MEMS IMUs)
