About the role

Senior leadership role responsible for building and operating Harmattan AI's environmental test laboratory from scratch, defining capabilities, sourcing equipment, managing a small team, and ensuring lab validation support and smooth handover to production.

Responsibilities

  • Define the lab and select the equipment: establish capabilities, specify, evaluate and procure machines (climatic and thermal cycling, water and dust ingress, vibration, UV ageing, including a large climate room for drone testing).
  • Decide what to internalise vs. outsource: determine which tests to own in-house and which to source from external labs, revisiting as products evolve.
  • Set up the facility: premises selection, site layout, utilities, installation, safety and commissioning.
  • Build and lead the team: recruit and manage 2-3 lab technicians, set working standards, and scale capabilities.
  • Support the validation teams: assist lab validation of projects, peer-review environmental sections of test plans, define tests, conditions and acceptance criteria.
  • Hand over to production: collaborate with quality to transfer test procedures to production (PVT and mass production) ensuring consistency with validation.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree in mechanical, materials, electronics, physics or similar, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 10 years in environmental testing, including establishing or substantially developing a test lab.
  • Strong command of environmental test methods and equipment (climatic and thermal cycling, vibration, water and dust ingress, UV, and related standards).
  • Proven equipment judgement: ability to specify, evaluate and procure test machines; build-versus-buy and in-house-versus-external decisions on cost and technical merit.
  • Experience leading a small technical team or readiness to assume that role.
  • Rigorous, methodical approach to test planning, acceptance criteria and documentation.
  • Ability to work across engineering, validation and quality, and translate between functions.
  • Bonus: defence or aerospace test standards (MIL-STD-810, RTCA DO-160), lab accreditation and metrological traceability (ISO/IEC 17025), drone/robotics background.
  • French language is a plus; English working level.
