Design Engineer
About the role
First design engineer at Hotplate responsible for the product look, feel, and UI systems, upgrading and expanding the design across the platform, and encoding design patterns into AI tooling to scale the design system.
Responsibilities
- Own how the product looks and feels for thousands of chefs and millions of customers
- Upgrade the design of existing features and keep UI consistent as the product grows
- Design and build the UI for entirely new parts of Hotplate as ships them
- Be a thought partner for engineers on UI for their features
- Co-develop visual rewrites in collaboration with the CEO in some areas
- Encode patterns into AI tooling so the design system scales to every project automatically
Qualifications
- Equally comfortable in Figma and your code editor
- Strong front-end engineering skills (TypeScript, React, SolidJS, CSS, animations)
- Eye for design details and craft
- Shipped polished products and experience taking things from 90% to 100%
- Ability to move fast with rapid prototyping
- Systems thinking with reusable, maintainable UI components
- Excitement about AI and defining new interaction paradigms

Hotplate is changing how people sell food across the US by giving Chefs and Bakers the tools necessary to solo launch and manage a food business online. There are talented people around the world capable of making amazing food, but either due to a lack of awareness, financial constraints, or the daunting overhead costs associated with traditional brick-and-mortar businesses, many never venture into this space independently. Hotplate is fueling a new model of food sales, allowing anyone to create a storefront, announce a sale, and coordinate local pickups with hundreds, or even thousands of customers—all within a 10-minute setup. Our aim is to make the food industry more available to everyone with the desire to enter it, consequently making food more accessible and diverse across the United States.
