Senior Software Engineer - ASE Data Services

About the role

Join ASE Data Services to build and operate high-performance, distributed datastores powering Apple services at massive scale. Design and ship features across client libraries, proxy services, and control plane for a large-scale distributed database system, collaborate with SRE to maintain production health, and influence the direction of database technology within Apple.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship cutting-edge features for large scale distributed database systems (client libraries, high performance proxy services, control plane, database core engine)
  • Partner with SRE team to keep platform healthy and resolve production issues
  • Contribute to the next generation of ASE Data Services platform and support its production health
  • Collaborate across time zones and mentor teammates to foster a growth-focused culture

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 4+ years of experience in software engineering
  • Experience building and operating distributed databases or storage systems at scale
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals including availability, consistency, durability, performance, and security
  • Comfortable working through ambiguity and collaborating with operations teams on production issues
  • Strong communication skills for distributed teams across time zones
  • Experience with observability and monitoring for distributed systems
  • Experience with capacity planning and performance tuning at scale
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes or similar orchestration platforms for stateful workloads
  • Open source experience is a plus
  • Strong proficiency in Java (JVM performance tuning and production debugging)
  • Strong proficiency in C (memory management and production debugging)
  • Hands-on experience with Cassandra, Kafka, Solr, Zookeeper, Redis, Valkey, or similar systems
  • Hands-on experience with data replication, compaction, and partitioning
