About the role

Director role leading all aspects of engineering for Places Data, combining AI/ML with software engineering to build a sophisticated ML-centric data platform for Apple Maps Places data. Oversees cross-functional teams, sets roadmaps, mentors engineers, and collaborates with product and partner teams to deliver fresh, accurate Places data at scale.

Responsibilities

  • lead all aspects of engineering for Places Data
  • combine AI/ML techniques with software engineering to solve complex map data challenges
  • collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, data analysts, labelers, and validators
  • architect a sophisticated ML-centric data platform
  • work on a spectrum of models from data center scale to edge solutions
  • define goals, set expectations, and shape roadmaps with partner and product teams
  • provide technical and career mentorship to the team
  • communicate technical complexities clearly to engineering partners, product management, and executives

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience applying and leading engineering teams that apply sophisticated statistical and ML methods to analyze and process large, complex data sets
  • Experience in one or more of: Algorithms, Architecture, Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, Deep Neural Networks, Distributed Systems, Information Retrieval and Machine Learning
  • Experience in Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing and Unstructured Web Data
  • Strong foundational understanding of mathematics behind modern machine learning (linear algebra and statistics)
  • Familiarity with databases, SQL, and scripting languages
  • Proven ability to translate requirements from design to implementation, independently and in teams
  • Demonstrated ability to build and inspire teams
  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in AI, ML, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field
