About the role

Apple seeks a Product Design Engineer to join the Product Design Group in Shanghai or Shenzhen, China. The role focuses on designing tight-tolerance mechanical components for iPhone product systems, developing test/validation infrastructure, and collaborating with cross-functional teams and vendors to resolve build issues. Travel up to 50% is possible.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop tight-tolerance mechanical components for iPhone product systems.
  • Create and implement test and validation infrastructure for DOE plans.
  • Characterize mechanical components and manufacturing assembly processes.
  • Support new product engineering builds by driving on-site issue resolution.
  • Conduct failure analysis on build issues to identify root causes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and vendors to implement effective corrective actions for build issues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Masters degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline
  • High degree of motivation, curiosity, passion, creativity
  • Proficient English communication skills in both written and verbal
  • Engineering fundamentals: statics, strength of materials, material science, heat transfer
  • Computer aided design (CAD) skills: 3D CAD experience required (NX preferred)
  • Design intelligence: mechanical intuition, creative problem solving, spatial reasoning, diligence in finding the best solution for each design challenge, attention to detail
  • Interested in traveling up to 50% throughout a year
  • Basic design skills: tolerances analysis, design for assembly (DFA), design for manufacturing (DFM), simple fixture design, understanding of Statistical Process Controls (SPC), understanding of metrology (basic knowledge of measurement systems)
  • Experience in design cycle from concept through manufacturing and a history of engaging with vendors to yield successful parts/assemblies
  • Experience in designing mechanical components for high volume manufacturing - injection molded parts, sheet metal components, die-cast and machined parts
  • Experience in team work with Contract Manufacturing Partners
  • Familiarity with AI application, programming and app development is a strong plus.
