About the role

Firmware Engineer role focused on High-Speed I/O and Data Transfer IPs within AMD's NBIO team. Responsibilities include designing and debugging embedded firmware, developing tooling, and collaborating across silicon bring-up and validation cycles for AMD SOC programs. Location in Markham, Canada with competitive CAD salaries.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, developing, and maintaining embedded firmware for HSIO/Data Transfer IPs, including firmware/hardware interface, register maps, and programming model, in partnership with RTL/hardware design teams as well as SoC/Platform FW teams.
  • Debugging firmware and IP issues across firmware/hardware/RTL boundary, driving root cause analysis during pre-silicon simulation, emulation, bring-up, and system validation.
  • Defining and executing firmware validation strategy, including unit testing, firmware/RTL co-simulation, and regression automation, for HSIO and Data Transfer features.
  • Developing and enhancing Python-based tools and infrastructure to accelerate data collection, debug turnaround, and validation test plans.
  • Engaging in pre-silicon 'shift left' activities with cross-functional teams to ensure readiness for first silicon arrival and IP functionality enablement.
  • Supporting post-silicon bring-up, debug, and firmware validation on silicon, including customer platforms as requested by support teams.
  • Contributing to design and code reviews, documentation, and mentoring on embedded firmware practices.
  • Leading collaborative technical discussions to resolve issues and roll out technical initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in EE, CS, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Strong C/C++ programming for resource-constrained, bare-metal/embedded firmware targets.
  • Experience developing firmware against hardware register interfaces, including pre-silicon bring-up and on silicon.
  • Ability to debug across firmware/hardware/RTL boundary using source-code debuggers and system debug tools.
  • Extensive experience with ASIC/firmware debug techniques and methodologies.
  • Strong Python scripting for tooling, data processing, and automation.
  • Experience with git or similar source control systems.
  • Knowledge of physical and protocol levels of high-speed interfaces is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of PC architectures/PCIe protocol is an asset.
  • Post-silicon bring-up and board/platform-level debug experience.
  • Experience with lab equipment such as protocol analyzers and oscilloscopes is an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work in dynamic team environments.
  • Leadership and mentoring skills are a definite asset.
  • Self-starter capable of independently driving tasks to completion.
