About the role

Performance Control Software Engineer at Apple to measure, analyze and control the relationship between power and performance in Apple’s systems. Responsible for studying workload execution on Apple silicon, inventing OS performance control features, designing experiments, creating instrumentation and data visualizations, prototyping in-kernel control algorithms, and productizing software that manages performance across hundreds of millions of devices.

Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct experiments to characterize execution efficiency and the effects of physical constraints such as temperature or current limits.
  • Use excellent empirical methodology to illuminate power–performance tradeoffs.
  • Collaborate with and influence a broad cross-functional audience spanning processor architecture, silicon engineering, system integration, OS development and application software performance evaluation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the measurement and control capabilities of Apple SoCs.
  • Invent new performance control concepts and carry them through prototyping, production implementation and tuning.

Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or similar engineering degree.
  • Experience with operating system design and implementation.
  • System level or low level software development experience in C or C++.
  • Minimum of 20 years relevant industry experience.
  • MS in Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering or similar engineering degree.
  • Knowledge of computer architecture and hardware performance monitoring instrumentation.
  • Userland software development experience in environments such as C, C++, Swift or Python.
  • Experience with system-level performance profiling, debugging tools, and tracing frameworks (e.g., DTrace, Instruments, perf).
  • Familiarity with data analysis, statistical modeling, or visualization techniques to interpret complex power and performance metrics.
