About the role

Storage SRE role at Apple Cloud focusing on building and running next-generation distributed storage systems to support Apple’s critical services. Involves owning projects, driving technical standards across a two-site team, on-call responsibilities, and shaping platform direction for large-scale storage infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Build, operate, and scale distributed storage systems in a private/public/hybrid cloud environment
  • Design, author, understand, and release code in Go (preferred), Java, Python, or Rust
  • Contribute to storage solutions across block, object, and file storage in Linux (LVM, XFS, ext4, S3, Ceph, Gluster, NFS)
  • Understand Linux internals, networking protocols, and distributed systems
  • Engage in provisioning, data migration, backup & recovery, at-scale testing, disaster recovery, and capacity planning
  • Automate manual operations and drive improvements through iteration
  • Advise on deployment practices for storage systems considering physical/virtual deployment, change management, and failure domains
  • Manage large numbers of diverse systems via configuration management or software delivery platforms (e.g., Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Spinnaker)
  • Deploy, support, and monitor new and existing services, platforms, and application stacks
  • Familiarity with microservices, Kubernetes, relational and non-relational databases (e.g., Cassandra, Postgres, RocksDB)
  • Collaborate to set technical standards across a two-site team and provide feedback to peers
  • Handle on-call alerts and critical issues to maintain high service availability
  • Learn and leverage internal and open-source tools for configuration, provisioning, logging, and monitoring

Qualifications

  • 4+ years experience in building, operating, and scaling distributed storage systems or large-scale stateful systems
  • Ability to design, author, understand, and release code in Go (preferred), Java, Python, or Rust
  • Good understanding of block, object, and file storage solutions in Linux (LVM, XFS, ext4, S3, Ceph, Gluster, NFS)
  • Understanding of Linux internals, networking protocols, and distributed systems
  • Experience with provisioning, data migration, backup & recovery, at-scale testing, disaster recovery, and capacity planning
  • Acute drive to automate manual operations and improve them through iteration
  • Awareness of deployment best practices for storage systems including physical/virtual deployment, change management, and hardware lifecycle
  • Hands-on experience with configuration management/automation tools (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Spinnaker)
  • Experience deploying, supporting and monitoring services, platforms, and stacks
  • Familiarity with microservices and Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with Cassandra, Postgres, and RocksDB
