Senior Bioengineer, Vienna
About the role
Senior bioengineer role at Parallel Bio in Vienna focusing on advancing organoid models, immune integration, multi-organoid formats, and automation for human-first drug discovery.
Responsibilities
- Advance the architecture and performance of organoid models, including new approaches to integrating immune cells into tissue constructs.
- Design the physical formats that multi-organoid systems will need, including plate architecture and interaction mechanisms.
- Develop co-culture systems linking immune organoids to other tissue types for disease modeling across indications.
- Bring bench-level automation into routine culture work, including automated media handling and hardware solutions.
- Own projects end to end, designing, building, and validating solutions while coordinating multiple workstreams.
- Collaborate with automation and software teams across sites, and maintain experimental continuity (weekend rotation).
- Document designs and experiments and communicate results.
Qualifications
- PhD in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, biophysics, biotechnology or related field with 5+ years of hands-on experience beyond PhD; or MSc with 8+ years of industry experience.
- Experience building 3D tissue or organoid culture systems (hydrogels, scaffolds, ECM, matrix characterization).
- Hands-on experience designing and fabricating custom culture hardware (CAD, 3D printing, soft lithography, laser cutting).
- Experience with scalable organ-on-chip, microfluidic, or perfusion systems is a strong advantage.
- Solid cell culture skills with primary human cells; broad immunological background across innate and adaptive immunity.
- Experience with iPSC culture/differentiation useful but not required (training provided).
- Practical experience with liquid handlers and lab automation platforms (e.g., Hamilton, Tecan, Lynx); familiarity with plate readers and automated incubators.
- Some scripting exposure; familiarity with Python or R is a plus; imaging and computational analysis tools advantageous.
- Strong ability to document designs and experiments and communicate results.
- Independent problem-solving and multi-project management abilities; comfortable working where there is no single right solution.
- Excellent collaboration skills and willingness to contribute to a growing, international team.

About Parallel Bio
Using the immune system to cure disease
Parallel Bio created a human 'immune system in a dish' to discover drugs and immunotherapies more likely to work in patients. Our platform has all of the same elements as a human immune system, meaning you can test drugs and vaccines as if you were testing them in actual patients from the start. The biggest reason why 95% of new drugs fail is that they were tested in mice - but with our human platform, pharma companies will know which drugs will successfully treat patients, speeding up the process and reducing the cost. To date our platform has successfully been used to test 12 drugs, and vaccines against 8 different diseases. The company is founded by Robert DiFazio, a former Stanford R&D director with a PhD in immunology, and Juliana Hilliard, a former System1 Biosciences R&D lead with an MSc in bioengineering, both of whom have led drug discovery programs for years.
