Software Engineer, Robot Interfaces
San FranciscoFull-timePosted 4w ago
About the role
Fullstack Software Engineer to build internal products for Pi's research and operations teams, focusing on human-robot interfaces, on-prem/edge deployment, and reliable workflows that span preparation, execution, and post-run feedback.
Responsibilities
- Own the human-robot interfaces: software used to run, monitor, and debug robots from setup through live operation and review.
- Design for the whole shift, not just the episode: create a single surface that guides attention across tools and people throughout preparation, troubleshooting, and handoffs.
- Design for safety: ensure unambiguous state, obvious failure modes, and safe actions; degrade predictably under issues like network drops or camera failures.
- Own the realtime edge: manage video, robot state, and control with tight latency budgets; work with controllers, headsets, pedals, and sensors.
- Draw the line between device and cloud: decide what stays local vs. what belongs in a centralized control plane.
- Ship into the physical world: on-prem and on-device deployment, versioning, rollout, and observability across sites.
- Make the work measurable: instrument interfaces to identify where time is spent and validate changes against metrics.
- Act as your own PM: gather requirements, prioritize, define success metrics, ship, and drive adoption by firsthand observation of shifts.
Qualifications
- Strong fullstack engineering experience building production web applications and APIs, especially with React, TypeScript, and Python.
- Realtime web experience: WebRTC, WebSockets, streaming video, state synchronization, and debugging.
- Comfort with binary wire formats and schema-defined interfaces: protobuf, gRPC, or similar.
- Experience shipping software that runs on machines you do not administer: on-prem or on-device deployment, degraded-network operation, fleet versioning.
- Strong UX instincts for high-stakes, high-frequency interfaces with physical consequences.
- Comfort designing workflows where people, hardware, and software function as one system.
- Strong product judgment and experience working directly with users through ambiguous workflows and evolving requirements.
