About the role

Storage SRE role on Apple Cloud storage infrastructure; design, operate, and scale distributed storage systems across multiple data centers, contributing to high-availability services used by hundreds of millions of users. Requires strong Linux internals, storage knowledge, and cross-timezone collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Understand team priorities; own projects or deliverables; design solutions and build buy-in; ensure timely delivery of designs and features
  • Handle on-call rotations including weekends; respond to alerts and escalations to maintain service availability
  • Collaborate across two shards in UK and US with cross-timezone meetings; drive technical standards
  • Learn and use tools for system configuration management, provisioning, software development & deployment, logging, and monitoring; improve them
  • Balance best solutions with practicality to deliver engineering challenges

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • 5+ years of experience in building, operating, and scaling distributed storage systems in private/public/hybrid cloud
  • Ability to design, author, understand, and release code in Go (preferred), Java, Python, or Rust
  • Strong understanding of block, object, and file storage solutions in Linux (LVM, XFS, ext4, S3, Ceph, Gluster, NFS)
  • Understanding of Linux internals, networking protocols, distributed systems; experience with provisioning, data migration, backup & recovery, at-scale testing, disaster recovery, and capacity planning
  • Hands-on experience with configuration management or software delivery platforms (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Spinnaker)
  • Experience deploying, supporting and monitoring services, platforms, and stacks
  • Familiarity with microservices, Kubernetes; relational & non-relational databases (Cassandra, Postgres, RocksDB)
