About the role

Apple is seeking a Product Design Engineering Intern to join the Watch Product Design Group in Shanghai, China. The role involves handling multiple projects with demanding schedules, applying scientific methods to create processes, solving on-site engineering problems for new product development, collaborating with cross-functional teams and vendors, delivering data-driven reports, and exploring new designs and processes to enhance performance and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Solve engineering problems on-site to support new product development and validation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and vendors to drive failure analysis through critical thinking.
  • Deliver concise, high-quality reports with clear data visualizations to support key stakeholders in effective decision-making.
  • Explore new designs, tools, and processes that enhance product performance and reliability, demonstrating an innovative mindset.

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD program in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Proficiency in English communication, both written and verbal.
  • Solid foundation in engineering principles, including statics, strength of materials, and material science.
  • Proficiency in basic design skills, including tolerance analysis, design for assembly (DFA), design for manufacturing (DFM), simple fixture design, Statistical Process Controls (SPC), and metrology.
  • Strong design intelligence demonstrated through mechanical intuition, creative problem-solving, spatial reasoning, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Expertise in 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD), with NX preferred.
  • Track record of navigating the design cycle from concept through manufacturing.
  • Background in designing mechanical components for high-volume manufacturing, such as injection-molded parts, sheet metal components, die-cast, and machined parts.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with Contract Manufacturing Partners.
  • Familiarity with AI application, programming and app development is a strong plus.
