About the role

Thermal Engineering interns/co-ops at AMD to develop advanced cooling technologies for AI, HPC, and data center platforms, involving thermal/hydraulic characterization, testing, modeling, and data-driven analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Thermal and hydraulic characterization of cooling solutions (cold plates, manifolds, heat exchangers, coolant loops, rack-level cooling).
  • Evaluate air-cooled and liquid-cooled platforms through thermal, airflow, coolant-flow, and pressure-drop analyses.
  • Support laboratory testing, instrumentation setup, sensor deployment, data acquisition, and thermal validation activities.
  • Develop scripts/tools to automate test execution, data processing, engineering analysis, and reporting.
  • Conduct thermal modeling, simulation, and comparison of measured data to design expectations.
  • Investigate thermal, flow, and power-related issues and work with engineering teams to identify solutions.
  • Document technical findings and communicate results via reports, presentations, and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Thermal Sciences, or related field (U.S.-based university).
  • Knowledge/experience in heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, thermal-fluid systems, or engineering analysis.
  • Thermal management solutions and cooling technologies (liquid cooling, cold plates, heat exchangers, airflow management).
  • Laboratory testing, instrumentation, sensors, data acquisition, experimental validation methodologies.
  • CAD software such as SolidWorks or Creo.
  • CFD/thermal simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS Icepak, Fluent, FloTHERM, COMSOL, OpenFOAM) or similar tools.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical documentation skills.
  • Exposure to AI infrastructure, HPC, server technologies, or energy-efficient cooling is a plus.
