About the role

Staff-level software engineer on the Retail Engineering Foundations team within Apple IS&T, responsible for architecting, designing, developing, testing, documenting, and maintaining backend code (primarily Java) and leading software projects across distributed teams to power Apple Retail’s data and application infrastructure with reliability, scalability, and security.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, design, develop, test, document, improve, and maintain code mostly in Java (and other languages as needed)
  • Participate in all project phases from planning through implementation and future iterations
  • Lead software projects and design solutions as a technical lead across distributed teams
  • Mentor senior-level software engineers
  • Leverage GenAI coding tools to accelerate development, improve code quality, and streamline debugging and testing processes
  • Contribute to building production applications with Spring ecosystem and microservices patterns
  • Work on cloud-based distributed systems with focus on reliability, performance, security, and scalability
  • Design and implement message-driven and event-driven architectures including messaging systems and CQRS patterns
  • Design, implement, and optimize database schemas and queries across relational and NoSQL databases
  • Contribute to observability, monitoring, and performance optimization of large-scale systems
  • Collaborate across Retail and Marcom Engineering to connect Apple Retail’s products with customers and support interactive marketing experiences

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent professional experience
  • 8+ years software development experience; longer preferred
  • 4+ years Java experience with mastery in concurrency, memory management, and performance optimization
  • Mastery of OOP, data structures, algorithms, and design patterns (GoF) with focus on maintainable backend code
  • Experience with Spring ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Data, Spring Cloud, etc.) and microservices design
  • Cloud platform experience (AWS, GCP, Azure) with IaC, containerization, orchestration (Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience designing/shipping high-scale, fault-tolerant, secure cloud-based distributed systems
  • Experience with messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ) and event-driven architectures (CQRS, event sourcing)
  • Proficiency with relational (Oracle, Postgres, MySQL) and NoSQL (Cassandra, MongoDB) databases, including schema design and query optimization
  • Track record as a tech lead across multiple distributed teams and ability to mentor engineers
  • Hands-on experience with GenAI coding tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot, Codex)
  • Experience with search/indexing technologies (Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Solr) and designing search architectures
  • Expert-level observability and monitoring skills (Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, APM, CloudWatch)
  • Expert-level networking concepts and infrastructure (HTTP/HTTPS, TCP/IP, CDN, load balancing, edge computing, DNS, Zero Trust)
  • Advanced JVM internals knowledge (garbage collection, memory management, JIT, JNI)
  • API design and implementation expertise (REST, gRPC, GraphQL, OpenAPI/Swagger, Protobuf) including versioning, gateway patterns, rate limiting, and backward compatibility
